The legend
The sage who split the rock
The name comes from Bochica, the sage of Muisca mythology in Colombia who taught his people and split the rock to save them.
Bochica reached the savannah of Bogotá as an old, bearded sage with a staff. He taught the Muisca to weave, to farm and to live as a community. When a great flood covered the savannah, he struck the rock with his staff and opened the way for the water to drain: that is how the Tequendama Falls were born.
